Attend a Performance

Project STEP's calendar is filled with performances held in a variety of venues in and around Boston. A great way to get to know the program is to attend one of them - at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall's Cabot-Cahners Room or Higginson Hall, or the Hall of Ideas in the Christian Science Church.

Master classes provide unique opportunities to see and hear well known performers off the concert stage, where they meet with our students as they guide and teach them on techniques and strategies to enhance the students' performances. Held twice a year, master classes offer a close-up look at the delicate and demanding work that goes into mastering a musical instrument, and performing a piece of music. Renowned artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, Jaime Laredo, Lucia Lin, and Marcus Thompson have lead these extraordinary classes.

Volunteer at a Performance

Project STEP has a substantial performance calendar and welcomes volunteers to assist with these events. Volunteers help arrange refreshments, welcome guests at the door, and hand out programs and other materials.

There are also volunteer opportunities behind the scenes, helping with activities such as getting out large mailings out and readying files to be moved to deep storage.

For volunteer opportunities, contact Javier R. Caballero, Program and Development Coordinator, by phone at 617-267-5777, or click here.

Underwrite a Performance

Project STEP students perform in rooms at Symphony Hall and other Boston locations throughout the year. Each performance requires rehearsal space, music, transportation of students and music stands, and coaching sessions. Costs vary, beginning at $300.

Gregory E. Bulger

On Sunday, June 10, 2007, at 3 p.m . , Project STEP celebrated its 25th Anniversary on stage at historic Symphony Hall. It was a gala event featuring Project STEP alumni and the Eroica Trio, along with other outstanding performances.

We are grateful to the Gregory E. Bulger Foundation for its lead gift and to other sponsors in support of this celebratory event.

To underwrite a performance, contact Mary Jaffee, Executive Director, by phone at 617-267-5777, or click here.

Donate an Instrument

Project STEP has an impressive instrument collection of 268 violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. We are always looking for quality fractional-sized instruments - half-sized violins, and small violas and cellos. Your donation is tax-deductible up to the value of the instrument, and we will obtain a verbal estimate on the value if you deliver it without a written appraisal.

To donate an instrument or an item on the wish list, contact Javier R. Caballero, Program and Development Coordinator, by phone at 617-267-5777, or click here.

Our campaign to secure and expand Project STEP is meeting early, strong success, and an announcement will be made in February regarding a new scholarship.

Project STEP teenagers will gather with the Museum of Fine Arts Teen Council to share their experiences in art and music, and to talk about why it is important to engage young people in artistic matters. Their first meeting was in the MFA’s Impressionism gallery, where STEP students performed Ravel sitting amidst masterpieces painted in his era. Then the MFA’s teens gave our students a personal and informative tour of their favorite paintings in the gallery. Thanks to Susan Kaplan and the Kaplan Foundation, the teens will explore the appeal and importance of fine art and music for the next three years.
